Come to our unit in Galgorm, just outside Ballymena from 2-6pm. Its a FREE event for all the family where we will have lots of fun for both you and your pets.
Who all is coming?
We will have Vets from Fenaghy Vets offering advice on how to care for your pets, Karl from Mantella with his reptiles, birds and other wonderful animals for you to see and hold, Pawfect Doggie Treats with home made animal snacks, Ellen from Gal-groom doing styling. Pets at Home will also be here with Guinea pigs and rabbits.We will have prizes for the Cutest pet, Best dressed pet, and most unusual pet.

Did you know that dogs only have sweat glands on their feet? Therefore when they’re feeling hot, they can sweat through their paw pads, but it is only by panting LOTS that helps to cool them down by circulating the air through their body. The hotter they are, the more they will drool, so watch for the signs to help keep them cool.
You can help keep your dog cool by grooming them, but don’t reach for the clippers just yet! During the summer I get calls for Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Samoyeds, Husky owners, pleading for me to shave their dog as short as possible as they are too hot. This is not the answer and you could cause your dog more harm than good.
Most dogs have 2 coats; a top coat and an undercoat. The top coat is to repel dirt and water, and the undercoat acts as insulation.
Usually they have not been groomed regularly or thoroughly at home, the undercoat has become packed and is nearly like a wool jacket underneath the dog, so they are too warm. Simply by sending them to the groomers to get a professional job done – removing as much dead undercoat as possible, allows the air to circulate through their hair and cools the dog down. It’s just like a person taking off their jacket, suddenly they can feel the wind on their arms.
Dogs which are normally clipped e.g. schnauzer, westie, lhasa, shihtzus etc you can clip their hair shorter than normal to help keep them cool, but with white dogs especially, you must be careful in the sun, as dogs can get sun burnt too.
