Here at Ballymena Today we’re passionate about supporting local business and it was great to hear that the bread which Refinery Coffee Shop uses is baked just down the road in Ballynure – hand crafted sourdough bread baked by hand by Zac’s Bakehouse. All the cakes, buns and tarts are made by Refinery Coffee Shop staff including fabulous brownies, banoffee tarts, lemon & poppyseed cake and much more. Their salads and sandwiches are prepared in-house as well ensuring you get to eat the freshest of food!

When you visit Refinery Coffee Shop if you get to meet Liam, the manager, you’ll quickly realize from his accent that he’s not from this part of the world! We asked him to tell us a bit about how he ended up managing a coffee shop in Galgorm. “I’m an Aussie, and around 15 years ago lots of coffee bars were opening in Sydney where I lived. Speciality coffee in particular was getting very popular. I began working as a barista and learning as much as I could until eventually I opened my own espresso bar. Life moved on, I came to Northern Ireland and recently took on the role of manager of Refinery Coffee Shop. For me this is really exciting as I see the coffee shop culture growing here too!”

Finally we asked what was the connection to Green Pastures church. “We are different to most businesses in that all the profit we make from the coffee shop goes to Green Pastures work with young people. I believe this is a great cause as it helps local young people around the Ballymena area to be in a healthy environment where they are encouraged to achieve their dreams”
