Slemish Market Garden ready for Strawberry Season with new variety called “Malling Centenary ” currently in their shop. The Northern Ireland strawberry season has just kicked in and now is the time to enjoy locally grown produce when it is at its best. Why does it matter if we eat food out of season? Website Eat the Seasons gives us this advice:

WHY EAT THE SEASONS?

There are a number of good reasons to eat more local, seasonal food:

  • to reduce the energy (and associated CO2 emissions) needed to grow and transport the food we eat
  • to avoid paying a premium for food that is scarcer or has travelled a long way
  • to support the local economy
  • to reconnect with nature’s cycles and the passing of time

but, most importantly, because

  • seasonal food is fresher and so tends to be tastier and more nutritious

Slemish Market Garden say that the strawberries in the shop are large, juicy full of the nicest, honey sweet flavour, they are proving hard to resist! Click here to read more from Eat the Seasons and be sure to check out their list which tells you what fruits and vegetables are in season at the moment.

Slemish Market Garden also posted this adorable video of a new guest in their gardens

As we work dawn till dusk ,over the year we wear out work boots very quickly but we find a use for even an old boot , screwed to the sheltered side of a tree or fence ,it is no longer a throwaway item but a luxury apartment , brings to mind the old nursery rhyme ” there was and old woman who lived in a shoe “
