This month the Ballymena book club will be read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. The is is a modern classic which is set in the Republic of Gilead, a land where women have had all of their rights removed and everything is not quite what it seems to be. The book is set in the US, after a fundamentalist group have over thrown the government and killed the President and Members of Congress. They impose their own regime to take away the right of women, judging them on the marital status, age, and most importantly their fertility. Clothed in outfits that display their status in society we read the story of a handmaid – an it is thrilling.

Ballymena Book Club read The Handmaids Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale has been made into a film and this year has been remade into a tv series by Hulu starring Elizabeth Moss.

It has proved popular and certainly is not for the faint hearted. It is apocalyptic and dystopian as has feminist themes – but most of all is a beautifully written, compelling story.

You can buy your copy in Waterstones in Ballymena.

Below is one of my favourite Youtuber’s Sanna from Books and Quills who last month chose this as a book in her End of he World Book Club. Have a look at this video if you have read the book or want to find out more about the story.

The Handmaid’s Tale is the latest book being read by Ballymena book club from the month of May. The book club will be meeting in Waterstones in Ballymena on Wednesday 7th June at 7pm. As always all are welcome to come and join in.
