Ballymena star launches 2015 Allianz Garden Show

In recognition of National Gardening Week, Ulster Rugby Star Ian Humphreys from Ballymena and his family helped launch the family programme for this years Allianz Garden Show Ireland event which will take place from 8-10 May at Antrim Castle Gardens. Promising a ‘Festival of flowers, food and fun’, the 2015 Allianz Garden Show Ireland programme offers plenty for families. From ‘Bush Craft’ skills and Archery for young adventurers to honey making, planting and basket weaving – kids can pick up lots of new skills. A dedicated children’s ‘Bean Bag Cinema’ will provide a welcome rest point for weary legs and `Allianz Scarecrow Wood’ – created by children from Integrated Schools throughout Northern Ireland – is always a talking point for the little ones! Plus, for the grown ups, live music, artisan food and drink stalls, cream teas, thousands of plants and crafts and plenty of gardening experts on hand, including BBC’s Monty Don who will be appearing at the Show on Saturday 9th May. Ballymena Today Love Books

Here at Ballymena Today we love books. We already go along to Ballymena Bookclub at Waterstones in the Fairhill Shopping centre and we love nothing more than tackling books which have been nominated for a prestigious prize. This year six authors work has been nominated for the 2015 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction. A few familiar names have popped up in this shortlist. Most of the authors, most notably, Ali Smith, Sarah Waters and Anne Tyler are familiar with the award process as they have been nominated for lots of awards before. This year the short list offers a varied bunch of great writers, established and new. They are: Outline by Rachel Cusk The Bees by Laline Paull (which we have already tore through!) A God in Every Stone by Kamila Shamsie How to be Both by Ali Smith (this comes recommended by members of Ballymena Bookclub) A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters The winner wins a fantastic £30,000 and the shortlist usually is a good indication of what we should be planning as out summer reads. Singer Songwriter Owen McGarry will be playing in Ballymena at Red Star Music this weekend. This is part of the Red Star Music Unplugged Sessions showcasing some of our finest local musicians. Owen will be playing on Friday 24th April. Owen McGarry is an electronic-pop/singer-songwriter from Northern Ireland. The village of Broughshane, outside Ballymena, will host another indoor market on Saturday 25th April.Raceview Mill is a family company converting a derelict mill in Broughshane into a vibrant centre for fledgling businesses, tourism and the Arts.
