Ballymena Today loves Esio Trot

Roald Dahl’s “Esio Trot” is one of our favourite books here at Ballymena Today and we were very excited to watch the BBC adaptation this Christmas. Dustin Hoffman and Dame Judi Dench starred in the quirky tale which watches two neighbours from a relationship with the help of a few tortoises.   Narrated by James Corden the “Esio Trot” takes the simple tale and adds a few extra characters, twist and turns to produce a charming love story. Mr Hoppy (played by Hoffman) falls in love with his neighbour Mrs Silver (Ms. Dench) and he pulls out all the stops to make her happy. What is the one thing that would make Mrs Silver happy? Mrs Silver would love her beloved tortoise Alfie to grow. What comes next is an adventure involving ingenuity, cunning and lots of four legged friends. If you didn’t see it on BBC one then you might just have time to catch it on the BBC i-player. We loved “Esio Trot” and are sure that lots of you will be thinking about picking up a little tortoise friend after watching. A tortoise is a great pet as they are easy to handle and happy to live indoors. Some hibernate throughout the winter and they can live for anywhere from 50 to 100 years. First Trip to the Vet – Advice from Ballymena Today

Ballymena Today have some advice from Grove Vets about your first trip to the vet. Maybe you added a cat, dog or another animal to your family this Christmas and aren’t sure what to expect when you take them along to the vet for the first time. Here are some points which should help you along: Make sure that you have a secure carrier to transport your pet. Bring all the documentation which you received when you get you pet. If you are bringing a dog along take them for a short walk before your visit so they can answer nature’s call. Don’t leave your pet alone in the waiting room and remember that other animals will be there. Once you arrive at the vets check in with the receptionist so that they know you are waiting. Once the vet is ready to see you they will give your pet a check up and they ask you for any samples and if you have noticed any problems with your animal. Don’t worry your vet and the nurses will help you with your pet and discuss any problems which crop up. Samaritans advice about Self Harming

Self harming is a serious issue and Samaritans have advice for anyone who is struggling with this. BBC Newsbeat has reported “a 20% rise in the number of 10 to 19-years-olds admitted to hospital because of self-harm injuries across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.” Click here to read their article in full. Red Star Music | Ballymena School Of Music

We have seen a few new shops opening in Ballymena recently, one of which is Red Star Music, opened by Ballymena School of Music. Ballymena School of Music have been offering music lessons for 8 years now from their premises at Ballymoney Road, but they have just embarked on this exciting new venture by opening their own shop – Red Star Music on John Street, Ballymena. Ballymena School of Music owners Stuart & Heather told Ballymena Today that they wanted to open Red Star Music so they could offer a complete music package. They said “We wanted to be able to provide musical instruments for our pupils and the greater Ballymena community and having our shop on John Street means we can now offer this.
