RIBA Stirling Prize Shortlist 2014 – Part 2

Ballymena based Wilson and Mawhinney introduce the second half of buildings which have been nominated for the RIBA Stirling Prize Shortlist 2014. Click here to view the first three shortlisted buildings. Here are the final contestants; Library of Birmingham – This bold city library flies in the face of other town and city libraries which have been forced to close down due to spending cuts and a drop in popularity. This bold structure shows that Birmingham are taking reading seriously and investing in the future generation who will use the building.   London School Of Economics – This building is all about contrasts as curves meet corners and the internals are stunning. A bricklayers nightmare this building was constructed using more special brick shapes than standard ones meaning lots of geometric angles and puzzles to solve during the building – and not a singel cut brick among them.   London Bridge Tower / The Shard – The Shard has changed the London skyline forever, being spotted for miles around. This project is impressive because of the limited space and complex engineering that went into the project at the planning stages. Arguable the most famous of all the shortlisted projects. Which is you favourite? Who do you thin will win the RIBA Stirling Prize this year? Wilson and Mawhinney are excited to see who wins the award this year. If you have a project...

The Grocer – Throwback Thursday

This shop window must have been like a magnet to the children of Bridge Street, Waterford – Licorice Allsorts, Mixed Gums, Fry’s Shilling and Raspberry Cream Choclate… Really gorgeous array of early 20th century goods on display here! Presumably that’s Mr Mortimer standing in the doorway? Date: Saturday, 24 June 1916 [Image & info source] There aren’t many places like this on our streets these days… not in Ballymena anyway. In recent weeks as I’ve been out and about, running, walking or just killing time around town, I’ve wondered a few times what men like Mr Mortimer would make of how shopping is carried out today. My Grandfather had a grocers in Ballymena town on Hill St, similar in many ways to the one pictured above… I’ve seen pictures but don’t remember it. The building was flattened long ago and is now a block of flats! F.J. Boyd… what would my Granda Frank make of the huge shopping circuses on the outskirts of our towns…hopefully I’ll be able to write a bit more about his shop soon. Tell you what though, I bet the inside of these old shops were...

Warning Signs that you might need new car tyres

Ballymena Tyres, located at Warden Street in Ballymena, want to share five warning signs that indicate that you need to put new tyres on you car or vehicle. Tread Depth – The tread on your tires should never fall below 1/16 of an inch (1.6 millimeters) in depth. If you regularly drive on slick, wet surfaces, you’d be even better off with twice that much. Tread wear indicator bar – Newer tires have a convenience that older tires lacked. They have tread wear indicator bars built into the tires themselves. These bars, invisible or barely visible when the tires are new, gradually begin to appear as the tread wears down. Cracks in the sidewall – Look for tracks or cuts in the sidewall — grooves that are distinct enough to be visible to the naked eye. This could be a sign that your tire is developing a leak (or worse, that it’s nearly ready to blow out). Bulges and Blisters on the tyre – This weak spot can cause a sudden blow out, and if you don’t change your faulty tyre before this happens, it may end up putting you in the hospital when the tire blows out on the motorway. Too Much Vibration – A certain amount of vibration is inevitable when driving, especially on poorly paved roads, but if you’ve been driving for a while, you probably...
