Ballymena Bookclub are reading Black Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin for the month of March. The bookclub have returned to one of their favourite genres – a good old fashioned thriller – but is all as it seems in this new novel?
Black-Eyed Susans is a chilling psychological thriller and a tense and gripping whodunit, but it is also so much more besides. It is a masterfully crafted story, rich in pitch-perfect details, brilliantly realised characters and nuanced themes. It is as human as it is forensic, exploring modern methods of investigation as well as the darker aspects of human nature.
Advances in forensic science, and the minutiae of evidence play a large part in the narrative, but so too do the more abstract themes of honesty, instinct and notions of innocence. At the heart of the novel is a question: who is the real victim in this story? (Source)
Waterstones have chosen Black Eyed Susans as their Thriller of the Month meaning we have high hopes. Touted as the next Gone Girl, and perfect for any fan of The Girl on the Train we are interested to see how the story twists and turns. Ballymena Bookclub meets in Waterstones on the first Wednesday of every month and all are welcome. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 6th April at 7pm.
