Toast in Cullybackey

The Ballymena Today youth team blog about their new favourite local business! Here we go . . . Live in Ballymena and struggling to think of places to go to meet up with a friend? Where to read a good book while sipping a coffee? Well, look no further! Here’s why… Last Saturday, I went to ‘Toast’ in Cullybackey with (believe it or not!!) Cherry (blog writer to the stars)! ‘Toast’ is a fairly new-built café which serves breakfasts, lunches, snack and drinks (especially coffee). There is a takeaway service available, and they also serve afternoon teas (booking however must be made in advance). And, just for a heads up, “Toast” stands for Totally Original And Seriously Tasty! Toast, although looks like a small café from the outside, when you walk through the entrance you will realise just how big it is! It has a very relaxed atmosphere, with some people chatting away at their tables, and some soft music playing in the background, so you also don’t feel as if you’re speaking “too loud” and that people are going to listen in on your conversation! I ordered a hot chocolate and a rocky road traybake, which was very yummy… I simply took the traybake at the till, and ordered a hot chocolate, which I got very soon afterwards. Long story short: it was the nicest hot chocolate I...

Tips for going from primary school to secondary school

In Ballymena there are lots of Secondary schools which you can go to. Starting Secondary school is a massive step, especially if you come from a small primary school so Ballymena Today Youth Team member Rachel has given us a few insider tips from her first year at secondary school. The change from primary school to secondary school is really big. If you have read my previous blog about my first day of school, then you will know that there are some hints and tips in there on how to survive the change. However one thing I haven’t mentioned is how to behave in front of the teachers. You want to make a good impression at the beginning because they’re going to be your teacher for the whole year, and probably even more after that! So make sure that you are hard-working or conscientious, and they will probably like you from the very start, and therefore you’ll probably have a good year with them (no promises made!). If you are worried about getting lost, it is really not such as big a deal as you might think. After the first week, you are zooming round the school as if you’ve been there your entire life. When I heard other people saying that, before I went to secondary school, I thought, “no way”. But now, when I think about it,...

How to survive the Transfer Test

We know that the Transfer Tests are looming in Ballymena and lots of children and their parents are unsure as to what lies ahead. Here’s Rachel, from our Ballymena Today Youth Team, telling us about her experiences of sitting the transfer test in 2013…… It was “transfer test” day and I was driven up to the school where I would be sitting it. In the car park, a Peer Mentor (secondary school pupil) met me and took me up to the room where the rest of my primary school P7 class were, who were also taking the tests, plus two...

Playing the flute

Rachel, from our Ballymena Today Youth team, started playing the flute in primary 4, through primary school, and now plays at secondary school, so she has been playing it for a long time. (Featured Image; Ray Bouknight; Creative Commons) For those who feel that they may wish to play the flute, here are a few suggestions from here that you may find helpful… When I was a lot younger, before I started playing the flute, I used to think that in order to blow it, you just had to be able to whistle. That, however, is not the case. To blow the...
