Using Instagram effectively

Last month one of the Ballymena Today youth team shared a post on how to set up your own Instagram account here. Have you done it yet? Even with plenty of evidence to the contrary, many small business owners still see sharing pictures on a platform like Instagram as pointless and a waste of their time. We think that’s crazy! We believe you must embrace at least one form of social media with your business or organisation and, if you sell products that can be photographed then a photo sharing service such as Instagram is a must-have tool to help...

Run N the Bann 5K

One of our Ballymena Today Youth team recently took on a 5K run. Why? Where? How? Read more below; After training, my Dad and I entered a 3 mile fun run at Portglenone. I didn’t know what to expect because it was my first time running in a fun run. I loved going out running with my Dad – even though he could barely keep up! When it came to the big day, we registered and got our numbers. I was very excited at the start of the race. There were about 500 people and quite a few junior runners, from what I could see, which was great because there isn’t a lot of places where teenagers and children can go to run together as a family, as part of the community. We all made our way down to the start. I saw my mum and sister there waiting to encourage us. Then the whistle blew and we were off. My Dad and I kept a steady pace, not going too fast at the start, but just speeding up gradually, which meant we could overtake people who were getting tired. Even when I felt tired, I didn’t give up. I didn’t want to give up, that would be disappointing for me.   It was such a different experience and it was so encouraging having others running beside you and...

How to choose a hockey stick

In Ballymena school term is starting soon and we know that it can be a struggle to choose a hockey stick. Elizabeth from the Ballymena Today Youth Team gives us some advice on how to pick the perfect stick! Here are a few pointers on choosing the right hockey stick for you. Firstly price. If it is your first time ever playing hockey you probably don’t want to be buying the most expensive one – but how do you know if it is good quality? There are many types of hockey sticks including wood and fibreglass. For beginners a wooden hockey stick is recommended. They are not as strong as a fibreglass but are cheaper. As well as considering price there are different brands. Even though certain brands may be more expensive than others you will get more wear out of them and they will last you longer. The main brands are: Grays Kookaburra Adidas Malik Voodoo (tend to be more expensive) After looking at the price you need to check the length. When measuring the hockey stick place the head on the floor and put it straight against your leg. If it is the correct fit for you it should come up to your waist. When trying it out here are a few questions to ask yourself:- Is it comfortable? Does the stick touch your stomach when you bend over? If...
