Shared Space for businesses

A few weeks ago we were in Dublin for the Coffee & Tea Festival – I blogged about it here & here on Coffee NI. One of the things about the coffee scene around Dublin that excited us were the shared spaces of Vice and Roasted Brown. The idea that a community of people sharing a building could unite to help sustain several different businesses is not a new thing… shopping centres work around this principle right? Sort of! But, what about smaller premises on or near the high street or in the case of Roasted Brown, right smack bang in the centre of Temple Bar in Dublin. They are in the middle of a building predominantly known as the home of Filmbase. The arts world always delivers an eclectic mix of visitors… Coffee thrives in this kind of environment though, different people come and go and bring others at various times and… coffee is always a welcome addition to any community. We blogged about a local pop-up coffee initiative that borrows some inspiration from this kind of thinking here . Maybe other local businesses will be watching avidly to see if these kinds of ideas might take legs. This article and the linked news story would suggest that we should take notice of pop-ups, shared spaces and fresh new...

Prevent Rural Crime on your Farm – Trailers and Horseboxes

Rural Crime is a real problem for farmers in Ballymena and throughout the UK. The BBC News report that “The level of rural crime in Northern Ireland rose by 15% last year, according to a survey by a farming insurance firm. The National Farmers’ Union Mutual Insurance Society (NFU Mutual) said the most-commonly stolen items were livestock, tractors and farming tools.” With that in mind Ballymena Today want to share this information over a few articles to help prevent rural crime from striking your farm. Today we will focus on Trailers, horseboxes and Tractors. These are an easy target for thieves as they are easy to sell on and quick to transport. Here are some tips to prevent your property being stolen; Try to park all vehicles as close to your house, or in your gates farmyard if possible, and keep out of sight from nearby roads. Consider installing a security light near to where you park your vehicles. Wheel clamps can be used to prevent trailers, horseboxes and other vehicles being driven away by thieves if you have to leave it somewhere overnight or longer. There are several trailer-marking schemes, which use either your postcode or a unique number that is entered onto a database. Write down any chassis or serial numbers for trailers and towing equipment. An event like this is being held in Ballymena soon – Click here...

RIBA Stirling Prize Shortlist 2014 – Part 2

Ballymena based Wilson and Mawhinney introduce the second half of buildings which have been nominated for the RIBA Stirling Prize Shortlist 2014. Click here to view the first three shortlisted buildings. Here are the final contestants; Library of Birmingham – This bold city library flies in the face of other town and city libraries which have been forced to close down due to spending cuts and a drop in popularity. This bold structure shows that Birmingham are taking reading seriously and investing in the future generation who will use the building.   London School Of Economics – This building is all about contrasts as curves meet corners and the internals are stunning. A bricklayers nightmare this building was constructed using more special brick shapes than standard ones meaning lots of geometric angles and puzzles to solve during the building – and not a singel cut brick among them.   London Bridge Tower / The Shard – The Shard has changed the London skyline forever, being spotted for miles around. This project is impressive because of the limited space and complex engineering that went into the project at the planning stages. Arguable the most famous of all the shortlisted projects. Which is you favourite? Who do you thin will win the RIBA Stirling Prize this year? Wilson and Mawhinney are excited to see who wins the award this year. If you have a project...
